POULTNEY, Vt. - The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) released its weekly women's cross country awards Monday and a familiar name appeared for Green Mountain College as freshman Maggie Hickey (Chesterville, Maine) was named this week's Rookie of the Week for the second-straight week for her performance in the Eagles' first meet this past weekend at the Castleton Invitational.
Hickey continued her excellent start to the season picking up a sixth-place finish overall out of 66 competitors in the Castleton Invitational 5K this past Saturday. The freshman runner moved up from being placed in the teens to her top 10 finish thanks to a great final kick during the last third of the race.
Her time of 23:01 bested her result from the first week by over a minute and helped the Eagles grab a fourth-place finish as a team among the 11-team field. It was also the fifth fastest time ran on the Castleton course by an Eagle runner since the program has been a part of the NCAA.
"The team and I are very happy that Maggie has been recognized by the conference for her hard work," said head coach Ben Davis. "She is a very talented runner who is driven to get better with each practice and the results are paying dividends for her early this season."
