Eagles Face Beavers in NAC Tournament Action

(October 29, 2009) - Poultney, VT - The Green Mountain College women's volleyball team earned the #5 seed in the upcoming North Atlantic Conference volleyball tournament and will travel to Farmington, Me. To take on the #4 Beavers of Me.-Farmington. The match is slated for Saturday, October 31st at 11:00 am.
GMC and UMF squared-off earlier this season with the visiting Beavers claiming a tight 3-2 victory. The Eagles jumped out to a 2-1 lead, but UMF staved off defeat in the 4th set (25-20) and sealed the win with a 15-10 victory in the decisive 5th set.
GMC's Melanie Rodriguez (Hoboken, NJ) excelled, totaling 16 kills, 29 digs, and added 5 service aces. Senior Emma Buckley (Lakeville, CT) chipped in with 13 kills and 23 digs in the loss while juniors Jen McGuire (Nutley, NJ) and Olesea Cojohari (Balti, Moldova) tallied 14 and 10 assists, respectively.
UMF's Shannon Mitchell (Porstmouth, NH) shouldered the bulk of the load offensively collecting 18 kills. Senior Catilin Flaherty (Plymouth, MA) was also instrumental in the Beavers success, nabbing 40 digs in the 5-set match.
Following the defeat, the Eagles finished the season 6-2 including 3 conference victories while the Beavers dropped 3 of 6 down the stretch.
Last season, GMC faced Castleton in the first round and cruised to a 3-1 victory, earning a trip to the semifinal round where they faced Husson University. After GMC mounted a furious comeback to nab the first set, Husson reeled of 3 straight set victories to advance to the conference final, 3-1.
The winner will move on to face #1 seed Maine Maritime Academy Saturday, November 7th. The Mariners area perfect 7-0 in conference action and have yet to drop a single game.
