Eagles Split in Opening Day of St. Joe’s (ME) Autumn Invitational

(September 11, 2009) - Standish, ME - The Green Mountain women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday evening in the opening day of the St. Joe's College (ME) Autumn Invitational.  The Eagles disposed of Lyndon St. in straight sets (3-0) in the first match and dropped the nightcap 3-0 to the host Monk's.  The Eagles enter Saturday's matchup with Me.-Machias at 2-2 on the season.

Against Lyndon, the Eagles dominated the match (25-16, 25-18, 25-10) earning their second straight victory.  Junior Melanie Rodruiquez (Hoboken, NJ) led GMC with a superb effort on both sides of the ball. 

Green Mountain squared off against St. Joe's in the nightcap and used 27 kills and 20 service aces to capture a decisive 3-0 triumph. Sophomore Caitlin Cleary (Scarborough, ME) continued her high level of play and posted 12 digs, 9 kills and 8 aces to help lead the Royal Blue to victory. Kiah Begley '13 (Berwick, ME) dished out 20 assists, Sarah Hawkes '13 (Pownal, ME) had 8 kills, Kaleigh McHale (Dracut, MA) notched nine digs and Jordan Pelczar '12 (Meredith, NH) recorded 10 digs in the win.

GMC's Rodriguez again led the way along with senior Emma Brinley-Brinkley (Lakeville, CT), as both collected 10 digs in the loss. Junior Jen McGuire (Nutley, NJ) chipped in with seven assists.

The Eagles return to action Saturday morning at 10:00 am when they face Me.-Machias.  The Championship match is set for 1:30 pm.
