Eagles Suffer Setback in Conference Opener

POULTNEY, Vt. - The Green Mountain College women's tennis team battled Castleton University on Tuesday afternoon and the Eagles were ousted 9-0 in their first North Atlantic Conference match of the season against the Spartans.

Jannelle O'Connell (Colrain, Mass.) and Claire Chapman (Litchfield, Conn) were outhit in first flight doubles, 8-2. Paige Vlahos (Little Silver, N.J.) and Lauren Coye (Plainstow, N.H.) were defeated 8-1 in the number two doubles spot. Finishing up the doubles action was Ruby Santiago (Worcester, Mass.) and Danjung Yoon (Daejeon, South Korea) who also fell in their match 8-1. 

Vlahos was defeated in top flight singles 6-1, 6-0 while Chapman was topped in number two singles 6-1, 6-2.

O'Connell was bested in straight sets in the third flight singles match, 6-4, 6-3 while Lauren Coye lost a hard fought battle in number four singles with a 6-2, 7-5 loss.

Santiago and Yoon were each defeated in straight sets as Santiago was handcuffed by a pair of 6-0 set loss at the number five spot, while Yoon was setback with a 6-1, 6-0 decision in the sixth flight singles matchup.

The Eagles will head to MCLA to face the Trailblazers in a conference match on Saturday, September 16th at 1 pm.
