RUTLAND, Vt. – The Green Mountain College women's tennis team battled Castleton University on Tuesday afternoon at Grand Slam Tennis, and although the overall play was improved from its first match, the team came away on the short end of an 8-1 non-conference decision against the Spartans.
Jannelle O'Connell (Colrain, Mass.) and Claire Chapman (Litchfield, Conn) were outsted in first flight doubles 8-3. Paige Vlahos (Little Silver, N.J.) and Lauren Coye (Plainstow, N.H.) were defeated 8-4 in the number two doubles spot. Finishing up the doubles action was Ruby Santiago (Worcester, Mass.) and Dan Jung Yoon (Daejeon, South Korea) who dropped their match 8-0.
Vlahos fell in top flight singles 6-1, 6-2. O'Connell was topped in number two singles with a pair of 6-1 decisions.
Chapman claimed the lone point for the Eagles on the afternoon battling long and hard in her match. The sophomore fell in the first set of the third flight singles match 6-3, but then battled to a 7-5 win in the second set and came away with a 10-7 victory in the pro style deciding set.
Coye and Santiago each suffered a 6-1, 6-0 set loss in the number four and five singles spots, while Yoon was handed blanked in the sixth flight singles matchup.
The Eagles will travel to back to Castleton to face Lyndon in a non-conference match on Saturday, September 9th at 11 am.
