DELHI, N.Y. – Green Mountain College received a pair of wins from Jannelle O'Connell (Colrain, Mass.) in doubles and singles action, but fell to SUNY Delhi, 7-2, in its season finale in women's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Green Mountain pairing of O'Connell and Claire Chapman (Litchfield, Conn.) took the top flight doubles matchup 8-5 over their opponents. Paige Vlahos (Little Silver, N.J.) and Lauren Coye (Plainstow, N.H.) were defeated at the number two doubles spot, 8-1, while Ruby Santiago (Worcester, Mass.) and Nang Hseng Leng Wann (Namkhan, Myanmar) fell in third flight doubles, 8-2.
Vlahos looked to put herself in a great position to take the top flight singles matchup winning the first set, 6-4. However, she fell in the second set 6-1 and was ousted in the third pro set, 10-5, in the midst of darkness setting in.
O'Connell dispatched of her opponent in straight sets in number two singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win.
Chapman fell 6-4, 6-2 in the third flight while Coye played a challenging first set, losing 7-5 and then fell in the number four spot in the second set 6-1.
Santiago was defeated 6-1, 6-0 in number five singles while Leng Wann lost in the final spot 6-2, 6-0.
The 2016-17 season was a resounding success for the Eagles' rebuilding women's tennis program. The team saw tremendous improvement across the board by both the returners and incoming students alike.
