Husson Beats Women's Soccer 5-0
(October 10, 2009) - Poultney, VT - Husson University junior Megan Clement's (Brunkswick, ME) unassisted goal in the 10th minute was all the visitors would need as they cruised to a 5-0 victory over the host Green Mountain College Eagles in women's soccer Saturday afternoon. Husson improves to 10-3 on the season (3-0, NAC) while the Eagles fall to 3-6-1 (2-1-1).
In a rematch of last season's conference tournament semi-final match, Husson fired the opening volleys, coming close just minutes in when GMC keeper Karen Davidson (Seymour, CT) went to ground only to watch a Husson attacker ping a ball of the crossbar. Consistent pressure by the visiting side resulted in the opening goal after Davidson sprawled to stop a vicious strike from Husson's Shelby Bradford (Lee, ME) only to leave the ball in the path of Clement who slipped it into the open net.
Husson continued to attack and found their 2nd goal of the match in the 24th minute. After winning a free-kick 35 yards from GMC's goal, junior center-back Caitlyn Butterfield (Gorham, ME) served an inch-perfect ball to Bradford who out-leapt her defender and found the back of the net.
The visitors would open the 2nd 45 minutes in much the same manner and tallied twice within 15 minutes. Sophomore Katelyn Cloutier (Groveton, NH) was responsible for both goals while Megan LaJoie (Van Buren, ME) notched both assists.
Husson ended their barrage in the 84th minute when Michelle Manning (Hampden, ME) broke free near the middle of the park and calmly finished the 1v1 chance.
Husson out-shot GMC 22-0 on the afternoon, forcing Davidson into 9 saves while also holding a commanding 11-1 advantage on corner kicks.
GMC Returns to action tomorrow at noon when they host NAC rival Maine Maritime Academy.
