Eagles Edge Terriers

(October 4, 2009) - Waterville, ME - After taking a 3-0 lead in the 1st half, the visiting Green Mountain College Eagles held on for a 3-2 victory over the host Terriers of Thomas College Sunday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. The Eagles improve to 2-5-1 overall (2-0-1, NAC) while the Terriers fall to 4-6-1 (0-3).
GMC opened the scoring in the 30th minute after a sustained spell of pressure provided a corner kick opportunity. Junior Corey Gilbert (Henniker, NH) served a ball on the back post where the a Thomas defended cleared, but only as far as the edge of the box where sophomore Erin Burch (Lebanon, CT) awaited to slot home her 1st goal of the season.
GMC doubled their tally in the 35th minute when freshman midfielder Emma Lord (Greenville, NY) struck a ball into the right corner from 20 yards after the Eagles built an attack through the center of the park. Sophomore Forward Taylor Riso (Portland, OR) added the final GMC tally in the 42nd minute following a foray down the right flank by freshman Lindsay Tassie (Williamstown, VT). Tassie's low service found Riso unmarked at the back post for an easy finish.
Thomas entered the final 45 minutes with a renewed sense of purpose and found there first goal of the match in the 51st minute. Julia Nyitray collected a ball inside the GMC box and coolly slotted home to cut the Eagle advantage to 3-1. In the 74th minute, Thomas drew within one through Julie Lawrence, but were unable to find the equalizer.
The Eagles squandered a number of chances to put the game away in the second half, but held on for an important conference victory. GMC outshot the Terriers 20-14 on the day.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday, October 7th when they host Daniel Webster College in non-conference action. The match is slated to kick-off at 4:00 pm
