Astor Nets Last-Gasp Winner for GMC

(October 24, 2009) - Lyndon Center, VT -  Freshman Bryanna Astor (Milltown, NJ) scored the game-winning goal with 39 second remaining to lift the Green Mountain women's soccer team to a hard-fought 1-0 North Atlantic Conference victory over Lyndon State College Saturday. 

With the win, GMC secured the  5th spot in the conference table and will travel to the University of Maine Farmington on Tuesday, October 27th for a 2:00 pm quarterfinal matchup.  The Eagles and Beavers played to a nil-nil overtime draw at Farmington earlier this season.  The winner will face #2 seed Husson University in the semifinals on Saturday, October 31st.

In the waning seconds of the game, the Eagles' Emma Lord lofted a cross toward the Lyndon goal that was mishandled by Hornets' goalkeeper Natalia Shams. Astor managed to punch home the miscue and sent GMC on to its sixth victory of the season.

Green Mountain keeper Karen Davidson (Seymour, CT) was outstanding on the afternoon, stopping nine shots including several point-blank efforts.  Davidson made 4 crucial stops in the opening minutes of the game to keep the score line level and just moments before Astor found the winner for the Eagles, she turned away a 1v1 effort  Lyndon State outshot the winners by a margin of 17-9 in the contest.

With the victory, Green Mountain improved to 6-8-1 over and 3-3-1in NAC while Lyndon falls to 7-9 and 1-6.
