Late GMC Rally Falls Short

The visiting Wells College Express held off a late rally by the host Eagles to claim a hard-fought 9-7 victory in women's lacrosse action Saturday.  With the loss, GMC falls to 4-4 while Wells improves to 3-5.

Wells opened the scoring early in the first half, pumping 3 goals past GMC freshman net goalkeeper Kelsy Allan (Jupiter, FL) inside 10 minutes.  Junior Emily Lotkowictz (Skaneateles, NY) netted the first at 28:30 followed by Ariella Taft (Cazenovia, NY) just 42 seconds later.  Stefanie Miller (Barton, NY) added the 3rd Express goal at the 20:35 mark.

Wells continued to press their advantage adding 2 more goals courtesy of Taft (15:27) and Lotkowictz (10:38).

The Eagles, however, found offensive continuity and broke through for their opening score with 6:14 remaining in the half when senior Amanda Jeffers (Homer, NY) converted an unassisted effort.  Amanda Malkin (Barrylakes, NJ) followed up by scoring twice in the final 3:44 to send the home side into the break down 5-3.

The Express started quickly in the second finding the back of the net 4 times in the first 13 minutes, running the score to 9-4 after GMC's Celie Degesse (St. Petersburg, FL) drew one back on a free-position attempt.  Lotkowictz added her second and third goals of the day while Charlotte Fielding (Queensbury, NY) and Gabriella Decker (Encinitas, CA) each scored one.

Green Mountain rallied late in the game, scoring 3 times in the final 2:43.  Malkin added two more to her tally at 2:43 and 2:04 and freshman Erin Burch (Lebanon, CT) made the score 9-7 with 1:33 remaining.

That was, however, as close as the Eagle's would get as the Express were able to run out the clock to claim the victory.

Wells goalkeeper Liz Barclay (Newcastle, ME) was outstanding on the afternoon, stopping 13 of 28 shots to preserve the win.  Emily Lutkowictz was the top offensive performer, netting 3 goals on 6 shots while scooping a pair of ground balls.

The Eagles Amanda Malkin had another terrific afternoon adding 4 goals to her season tally and grabbing three draw controls.  Kelsy Allan made 5 stops in goal for GMC.

GMC returns to action next Saturday when they host conference rival Husson University at 1 pm while Wells faces Cazenovia College April 15th at 4:30 pm.
