Eagles Beaten at the Buzzer
A Lyndon State college lay-up with 2 seconds remaining gave the Hornets a North Atlantic Conference victory on the road Tuesday night. Senior Elizabeth Hall (Newport, VT) drove the lane with 5 seconds remaining and found the basket amidst several GMC defenders.
The Eagles fell behind 6-0 in the first minute after the Hornets hit for 2 three-pointers before junior Christin Louras (Rutland, VT) opened the scoring for GMC with a 3 pointer of her own. Lyndon's hot shooting continued and at 12:37 another triple by senior Sara Fetterhoff (Jay, ME) extended the lead to 9. The Eagles, however, went on a 10-0 run to take the lead at the 9:48 mark courtesy of a Brittany Holden (Schenectady, NY) three-pointer. There were four more lead changes in the first half and GMC went into the interval with an 8-point advantage, 36-28.
Green Mountain maintained their advantage until the Hornets drew level at 52 with 3:34 remaining on a free throw by Naomi White (Danville, VT). Down 54-56, GMC's Christina Chamberlain (Woodstock, VT) made a lay-up with 7 seconds left on the clock before Hall's last second bucket.
The Eagles were led by sophomore Molly Hopper (Gouvernor, NY) who scored 16 points on 7-9 shooting. Junior Emma Buckley (Lakeville, CT) chipped in with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 7 blocks while Chamberlain collected 14 boards.
Seniors Kelly Warren (Carroll, NH) and Jackie Wetzel (Braintree, MA) both tallied 15 points for the Hornets while Fetterhoff collected 10 boards.
The Eagles fall to (6-3) on the season and (0-1) in conference play. LSC improves to (4-5) and (1-0).
