Student-Athletes Honored at Annual Athletics Award Banquet

The Green Mountain College athletic staff and Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) honored a number of exceptional student-athletes for athletic achievement, leadership, and service to the community Saturday morning at the annual Athletics Award Banquet.

Recently inaugurated Green Mountain College President Paul Fonteyn, numerous cabinet members, staff, parents, and student-athletes were on hand to support and congratulate the award winners.

Athletic Director Marybeth Lennox and Paul Fonteyn awarded men's lacrosse attacker Steve Braunius (Lake Pleasant, NY) and women's basketball/softball stand out Brittany Holden (Schenectady, NY) with the coveted James M. Pollock Senior Athlete Award.  Named after former Green Mountain College President James M. Pollock, the award is presented to a graduating senior man and a graduating senior woman who have contributed significantly to the athletics program at Green Mountain College. The award is based on athletic achievement, leadership, and other meaningful contributions to the College.

The women's Athlete of the Year Award was presented to junior Emma Buckley (Lakeville, CT) for her outstanding individual achievements with the volleyball and basketball teams this year. During the volleyball season, she finished ranked nationally in 3 separate categories; 16th in blocks per set, 20th in hitting percentage, and 25th in aces per set.  On the basketball court, Emma was 4th nationally in blocked shots tallying 4.2 per game and 24th in rebounds per game with 11.3.  She also lead the team in scoring with 12.7 points per game while shooting 48% from the field.  Sophomore Gerard Johnson (Binghamton, NY) won the award for the men as a first-year member of the 16-11 men's basketball team. This season, Gerard averaged 12.9 points per game, 3.1 assists, and was 33rd in the nation in rebounding with 9.9 per game.

Seniors Scott McGuiness (Middletown, CT) and Jessica Houck (Cortland, NY) were presented with the Service Award for demonstrating superior citizenship and ethical conduct on and off the playing fields of Green Mountain College.  Scott, a 3-year member of the men's basketball program, and Jessica, a soccer/basketball/softball player, are both active members of SAAC while also heavily involved in service to the Green Mountain College community and beyond.

Congratulations to all the award winners, coaches, training staff and individual teams on a fantastic 2008-2009 campaign.
