NEW LONDON, CT - Green Mountain the 2 seed took on the 3 seed Newbury College in their first game of the Independent Tournament.

Nerves were a big factor in this game for GMC as they had 4 of their 5 errors in the first 4 innings, but as soon as the Eagles were able to calm down things came together nicely. In the first inning both teams scored 1 run. Then in the second inning both teams scored 2. The score was tied 3-3 until the fifth inning when GMC came up with 3 big runs to lead 6-3. FR Nancy Laughlin (Pittsford, VT) led off with a single; JR Christina Chamberlin (Woodstock, VT) got on by an error; SO Hilary Dernier (Seattle, WA) grounded out to the pitcher but advanced both runners; then JR Jess Houck (Cortland, NY) singled to score Laughlin. SR Kait Petros (Tewksbury, MA) singled; JR Brittany Holden (Schenectady, NY) singled to score Chamberlin and Houck. The sixth was scoreless for both teams and in the seventh GMC gave up one run.

Holden got the win allowing 7 hits, 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.

The Eagles combined for 13 hits. Holden was 4 for 4 with 2 RBI's; Petros was 3 for 4 including a double and Laughlin had 2 hits and an RBI. FR Amanda Malkin (Highland Lakes, NJ), JR Natalie Clark (West Palm Beach, FL), Houck and Dernier each had a hit.

GMC will play the winner of # 1 Mitchell and # 5 UMPI.
