Brinley Buckley Reaches Milestone, Eagles Fall to Thomas

Boxscore
(Waterville, ME) - The Thomas College Terriers tuned back a second half run by the visiting Eagles to claim an 83-73 victory in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Friday night. With the win, the Terriers improve to 2-13 overall (1-6, NAC) while the Eagles remain winless in conference play (0-6) and 5-11 on the season.
The biggest story of the night for Green Mountain College was the individual performance of Emma Brinley Buckley (Lakeville, CT). The senior forward not only set a career high in both points (30) and rebounds (27) for her 11th double-double of the season, but she managed to surpass the 1,000 mark in both categories. Brinley Buckley finished the contest with 1,008 points and 1,001 boards and becomes the 1st Green Mountain College player in history to reach the historic plateau. Emma also leads the nation in blocks (4.9 per game) and narrowly missed her 1st triple-double with nine blocks on the night.
The only piece missing from the historic evening was a victory was GMC. The Eagles trailed by as many as 21 points in the first half as the Terrier sharp-shooters went to work from beyond the arc. Kellie Martel went 4-for-8 from 3-point land to lead Thomas who drained seven treys in the opening stanza on 47 percent shooting. The Eagles turned the ball over 19 times, shot only 30 percent from the floor, and headed to the locker room trailing 39-25.
GMC began the 2nd half on a tear and, with 9:38 left, Chelsea Paul (Northville, NY) converted a three-point play the hard way to pull the Eagles within three (56-53). Thomas, however, regained control, draining a pair of back-to-back three-pointers with just over three minutes remaining to seal the victory.
The Terriers were led offensively by Kellie Martel (Cambridge, ME), Karin Bird (Lee, ME), and Mallorie Blakney (Fairfield, ME), who finished with 22, 23, and 25 points respectively.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 pm when they head to the University of Maine Farmington.
