Eagles Edge Badgers in NAC Thriller

Boxscore

(Poultney, VT) - Jacque Caster (Seneca Falls, NY) and Katie Jablonski (West Rutland, VT) combined to hit four consecutive free-throws inside the final 20 seconds as the host Green Mountain College Eagles held off Johnson State College in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles improved to 7-12 (2-7, NAC) while the Badgers fell to 6-14 (3-6, NAC).

Leading 48-47 with 16 seconds remaining, Caster drilled a pair of crucial free-throws, giving the hosts a 50-47 advantage.  JSC's Angela Locke (Waterville, VT) responded for the Badgers, finishing a layup with only four ticks left before Jablonski sealed the win, draining both of her freebees.

Caster finished with her first career double-double notching 10 points and 10 boards while chipping in a pair of assists.  Emma Brinley Buckley (Lakeville, CT) went for 14 points, 14 boards, and three blocks for her sixth double-double of the season and Paul added 11 points for the Eagles who shot 91.7 percent from the charity stripe (11-12).

Jennifer Ferrari (Westfield, MA) paced the Badgers with 11 points on 4-for-10 shooting while Gleason notched 11 and had three steals.  Claudia Martineau (Washington, VT), averaging 11 points per contest heading into today, was held to only five points on 1-12 shooting from the field.

The Badgers jumped out to an early 13-8 advantage before Caster and Chelsea Paul (Northville, NY) drained consecutive three-pointers giving the Eagles their first lead of the contest.  Neither team was able to hold an edge throughout the remainder of the half which featured six lead changes, but it was the Eagles who gained the upper hand heading into the locker room when Jablonski canned a trey with one minute left giving the home side a 31-27 edge.

At the 12:23 mark of the second half, Chelsea Paul (Northville, NY) drilled a pair of jumpers and free-throws to spur an 8-0 Eagles' run marking their largest lead of the game at nine (44-35).  The Badgers would not go quietly, however, answering with an 11-0 run of their own over the ensuing five minutes with Maria Gleason (Enosburg, VT) capping the spurt with a 3-pointer and giving the visitors their final lead of the contest, 44-46.

It was all GMC down the stretch, outscoring Johnson St. 8-2 inside the final five minutes to salt the game away.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they head to cross-town NAC rival Castleton looking for their 3rd straight conference victory.  Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
