(Poultney, VT) - Husson University used a balance attack with four players reaching double-digit scoring to hand Green Mountain College a 76-61 defeat in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fall to 5-9 on the season (0-4, NAC) while Husson improves to 8-8 and remain perfect in conference action at 4-0.
Trailing 4-2 early in the contest, Husson's Shelby Bradford (Lee, ME) converted a three-point play to spark a 14-0 run by the visitors, capped off by a pair of three-pointers from Bethany Sevey (Skowhegan, ME). Husson remained in control for much of the half, but were unable to stretch their lead until an 8-0 run with three minutes remaining pushed their advantage to 14 (29-43) heading into the interval.
The Eagles chipped away at the lead in the 2nd half and closed to within 10 on two occasions, but were unable to close the gap any further.
Husson shot 40 percent from the field on the afternoon and 44 percent from beyond the arc while draining 17 of 26 free throws. Bradford recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 boards on 6-for-16 shooting while finishing 8-for-12 from the charity stripe. Sevey finished the day with 14 points (4-for-9 from beyond the arc), while Brianna Hanscom (Mattawamkeag, ME) notched 13, and Amanda Gifford (Lee, ME) pitched in with 11 points and a game-high 6 assists.
Emma Brinley Buckley narrowly missed a triple-double for the Eagles, finishing with 19 points, 17 boards, and 8 blocks. Freshman Chelsea Paul (Northville, NY) drained 18 points and grabbed six boards, while Chanleigh Casey matched her season high with 12 points.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they host Castleton in a crucial North Atlantic Conference matchup at 8:00 pm.
