Eagles Split Against UMPI

On a rain soaked afternoon, the Eagles softball team split a pair of home non-conference games against the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Green Mountain improves to 3-7 on the season while UMPI heads home at 9-7 overall.
In game one, GMC busted a close game wide open in the 3rd inning, plating 5 runs on 5 hits for a 6-4 win. Katie Jablonksi (West Rutland, VT), Christina Chamberlin (Woodstock, VT) and Brittany Holden (Schenectady, NY) loaded the bases for Emily Heale (East Bethany, NY) who laid down a textbook bunt to plate the Eagle's opening run. Karen Davidson (Seymour, CT) and Hillary Dernier (Seattle, WA) followed with a pair of singles driving in 3 runs to take a 4-0 lead. Gina Lorusso (Franklin, MA) finished off the scoring by driving in Davidson with the Eagles' 5th single of the inning.
The Eagles added one more run in the 5th on a Jablonski single.
The Owls battled back, scoring one in both the 5th and 6th innings, and 2 in the 7th before GMC pitcher Brittany Holden struck out Emily Moore (Libson, ME) to close out the game.
Holden picked up her 3rd win on the season, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and striking out a pair. Nicole Russell (Newcastle, ME) was saddled with the loss for UMPI.
In game two, the Owls' bats came to life, tallying 10 runs on 13 hits. UMPI opened the scoring in the 2nd with 4 runs on 4 hits. Nicole Russell picked up a pair of RBI's on a single before Danielle and Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) hit back-to-back doubles, plating 2 more runs. Brittany added the second of her 3 doubles in the 4th, driving home another run to take a 4-0 lead.
Green Mountain countered with 3 in the second when Jablonski drove in a pair with a 2-out double before Holden tacked on another with a single up the middle.
Chamberlin made the score 6-5 GMC with a 2-out triple in the 5th inning and scored on a Heale single.
The Owl's, however, would use a 4 run 6th to claim the win on a pair doubles by Brittany Humphrey and Emily Moore on relief pitcher Cass Neimeth-Lazar (Milan, NY). UMPI added another run in the 7th making the final score 10-6.
Green Mountain's Brittany Holden scored 2 runs and went 5-8 at the plate overall to lead the Eagle's. Karen Davidson also scored a run and batted .500 (4-8) on the afternoon.
UMPI shortstop Brittany Humphrey had an outstanding day including batting 4-8 (all four hits for doubles) and drawing a walk.
Next up, GMC travels to in-state NAC rival Johnson State Wednesday for a pair of games. UMPI faces Husson University Wednesday, April 15th.
