Eagles Sweep Mountaineers
The host Green Mountain College softball team picked up a pair of wins over Southern Vermont College 9-1 (5 innings) and 10-9 (9 innings) Thursday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 7-11 while the Mountaineers fall to 1-14.
In game one, GMC scored 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the victory. Katie Jablonski (West Rutland, VT) knocked a double driving in Jessica Houck (Cortland, NY) for the decisive run. Winning pitcher Brittany Holden allowed one run on three hits, and struck out three. Offensively, Holden powered the Eagles scoring three runs and belting a trio of hits including a homerun.
Senior Danielle Tischer (Salem, CT) picked up the loss for the Mountaineers. Freshman shortstop Kayla Whitman (Bennington, VT) scored the lone SVC run and collected one hit and a walk.
In the nightcap, the Eagles, trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, picked up a run thanks to an RBI single by Jessica Houck to send the game into extra innings.
SVC picked a pair of runs in the 8th on a double by Kayla Whitman and single by Cala Colvin (Hoosick Falls, NY). GMC countered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning when Brittany Holden knocked in a run and scored herself after 2 SVC players collided while chasing a fly ball in shallow right field.
In the decisive 9th inning, Eagles pitcher Holden struck out the first batter and forced a pair of fly-outs to keep SVC off the board.
With Hillary Dernier (Seattle, WA) on third following a passed ball, Jessica Houck flew out to left field. The ensuing throw to third was of course, allowing Dernier to scamper home for the game-winning run.
GMC returns to action this weekend when they host a pair of conference doubleheaders. On Saturday, the Eagles welcome Husson University followed by Maine Maritime academy on Sunday. Both contests are set to begin at noon. Southern Vermont host Mitchell College Saturday at 1 pm.
