Eagles Settle for Split with Mariners

Green Mountain College settled for a split with Maine Maritime in NAC softball action Sunday afternoon, picking up an 8-6 win in game 2 of the doubleheader.  In game one, the Mariners cruised to a 13-3 five-inning victory for their first conference win on the year. The Eagles now stand at 8-14 on the season and 3-5 in the NAC while MMA improved to 3-15, 1-7.

In the opening game, Maritime hurler Mallory Stanley (Standish, ME) allowed 3 runs (1 earnerd) while scattering 5 hits and recording 3 strikeouts for the win.  The Mariners tallied 4 runs in the fourth and 6 in the fifth on 10 hits.  Stanley helped her own cause going 2-4, scoring 4 runs, and picking up an RBI.

Emily Heale (East Bethany, NY) tallied a pair of hits and an RBI for the Eagles while pitcher Brittany Holden (Schenectady, NY) scored a run and drove in a pair.

In the nightcap, the Eagles pulled out an 8-6 victory thanks to an 8 run 3rd inning.  Despite only knocking 4 hits, GMC showed patience at the plate to draw 7 walks and used timely base running to seal the win.  Freshman Chanleigh Casey (Hartford, NY) picked a pair of RBI's in the 3rd when she drove a 3-1 pitch over the centerfielders head for a double and her only hit of the game.

Holden allowed 3 earned runs on 10 hits and struck out three in the victory.

Maritime CF Nicole Poland (Damariscotta, ME) was 2-3 in game two and scored 3 runs while teammate Hannah Seamans (Athens, ME) was 3-4 with 3 RBI's.

GMC welcomes cross-town rival Castleton State on Wednesday for a pair of conference games at 3:30 and 5:30.  Maritime faces conference leaders Husson University Wednesday.
