Spartans Clip Eagles in Sunday Afternoon Tennis

Rutland, VT – The Green Mountain College men's tennis team was overpowered by Castleton on Sunday afternoon at the Vermont Sports and Fitness Club.  The Spartans would only lose one set the entire afternoon en route to a 9-0 victory in the match.  With the win, the Spartans even their record at 2-2 overall, while the Eagles record dips to 1-2 on the season.

The Spartans began the match with three doubles match wins. Stew Quinn and partner Adam McCaffery upended GMC's duo of Christopher Donovan (Bedford, MA) and Samanta Tajirian (Springfield, PA) 8-2.  Chris Belanger and Matt Trombly continued with a victory over Laura McRee (Norwich, VT) and partner Sam Snyder (Old Greenwich, CT) 8-2, while Corey Kimball and Mike Divis completed the doubles matches sweep with a win over Andrew O'Neill (Philmont, NY) and Heeje Cho (Seoul, Korea).

The Eagles looked to the singles matches to put an end to Castleton's winning ways, but were unable to disrupt the Spartan's run of victories, ultimately losing all six singles matches.  Donovan and Quinn each won a set in the number one slot singles play.  Unfortunately, after leading the third set 3-2, the Eagles' Donovan fell short of winning the match as he dropped the third set to Quinn.  Quinn would win the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

GMC's Tajirian was lined up in the two slot against Castleton's McCaffery.  It was well-played match with numerous lengthy rallies, but in the end McCaffery was too much for Tajirian winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

The third slot pitted GMC's McRee against the Spartan's Belanger.  McRee's tough serve proved to be an obstacle for Belanger, but he would overcome it in the end taking the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

GMC struggled in the remaining three matches as Snyder, O'Neill and Nicole Cardish (Walden, NY) were outdueled by Jeremy Reppin, Divis, and Brian O'Neill, respectively.

The Eagles will return to the court on Saturday, March 31st, when they host NAC East opponent Colby-Sawyer at 1:00 p.m. at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Club.  The Spartans will in action next on Wednesday, March 28th when they travel up to Northfield, VT to take on the Cadets of Norwich University in a non-conference match-up scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
