Men's Tennis To Host Two Weekend Matches

Poultney, VT – The Green Mountain College men's tennis team is looking to build upon its victory over The Sage Colleges last Friday, as they prepare to host two North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East opponents starting with Lyndon on Friday, March 24th, and Castleton on Saturday, March 25th at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Club in Rutland.  The Eagles will be look for their first winning streak in the program's short history.

GMC (1-0) started the 2012 campaign off on the right foot as they beat the Gators 6-3 in a non-conference match-up.  The Eagles claimed six of the nine matches on the evening and received excellent play from its newcomers and solid play across the board.  The duo of Sam Snyder (Old Greenwich, CT) and Andrew O'Neill (Philmont, NY) seemed to gel well together as they cruised to an 8-1 decision, as Green Mountain took two of the three doubles matches to down Sage in doubles play.  In singles play, Chris Donovan (Bedford, MA), Laura McRee (Norwich, VT), Nicole Cardish (Walden, NY) and O'Neill all won their matches to help propel the Eagles past the Gators.

Lyndon (0-1) is looking to rebound from its opening day non-conference loss to Norwich University, which saw the Cadets handle the Hornets with ease on the way to their 9-0 victory.  Norwich swept the first three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead over the Hornets and then continued its dominance over Lyndon as the Cadets went on to win all six of the singles matches.  The young Lyndon team is still trying to work out the kinks early in the season as the majority of the team is made up of underclassmen with five of the players being freshman.

In their last meeting back on April 22nd, 2011, the Hornets beat the Eagles 8-1, which brought GMC's all-time record against Lyndon to 0-9.  In that last meeting, Green Mountain was able to capture its lone victory on the day behind Samantha Tarjirian (Springfield, PA) as she won the first set 7-6, but then lost the second set 4-6.  In the last set Tarjirian came out strong and went on to beat her opponent 6-1 in a well-contested match-up that saw two evenly talented competitors go head-to-head.  This time around the Eagles will look to rely on their more seasoned players, as Lyndon has limited collegiate experience on the courts.

Saturday's match-up has Green Mountain pitted against rival Castleton (1-2) who is coming off a spectacular all-around performance, as the Spartans dismantled The Sage Colleges for their first victory of the season by the score of 9-0. Freshman Stew Quinn (Newton, NJ) and sophomore Adam McCaffrey (Niantic, CT) started the day off on the right foot for the Spartans as they won the first doubles match of the day 8-2. Castleton would go on to win the next two doubles match to capture all three doubles matches against Sage.  In singles play, Quinn and McCaffrey's success in doubles play translated to their singles play. Quinn won his match 6-1, 6-0 and McCaffrey won his match 6-4, 6-2 as the two men would help lead Castleton to victory.

In this upcoming match-up between Green Mountain and Castleton, the Eagles are 0-8 all-time against the Spartans dating back to the 2008 season.  In their last meeting back on April 26th, 2011, the Spartans ran away with the victory as they captured all nine matches to sweep the Eagles on the day.  This time around, Castleton will have lost some key contributors and players from a season ago, so when the Eagles and Spartans face-off in a clash of NAC East conference foes, the play should be more evenly matched.

At the conclusion of these two games the Eagles will return to the court on Saturday March 31st, when they host NAC East opponent Colby-Sawyer at 1:00 p.m. at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Club.  Lyndon will be idle until it hosts NAC East opponent Johnson State on Saturday, March 31st, with a start time slated for 1:00 p.m.  As for the Spartans, they will be back on the court Wednesday, March 28th when they travel up to Northfield, VT to take on the Cadets of Norwich University in a non-conference match-up scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
