MCLA Upends Eagles

(September 30, 2009) - Poultney, VT - The visiting Trailblazers converted a first-half penalty kick and pair of goals in the final 45 minutes to claim a 3-0 victory over Green Mountain College in men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon.  MCLA improves to 4-2-1 on the season while the Eagles are still winless at 0-6-1.

MCLA wasted no time, going on the attack from the off and, in the 8th minute, were awarded a penalty kick on a GMC handball.  Sophomore Casey Baker (North Adams, MA) slid the ball past the outstretched arms of freshman Nate Kishbaugh (Niskayuna, NY) for the opening goal of the match.

The trailblazers controlled the play for much of the first half and nearly added a second when freshman Jake McCall (Lincoln, RI) struck a ball off the underside of the crossbar, but was scuttled away by an Eagles' defender.

The second half featured much of the same with GMC struggling to gain a foothold.  After a sharp run down the right flank, Baker slid a ball across the face of the GMC goal where a retreating defender tragically knocked the ball into his own net for the second goal.

MCLA added their 3rd in the 67th minute when freshman Jordan Hoofnagle (Peabody, MA) scampered down the left flank and served to an unmarked Tom Duplisea (Saugus, MA) who headed home.

The Trailblazers outshot GMC 21-3, forcing Kishbaugh into 11 saves.

The Eagles head to Maine on Saturday, October 3rd for a pair of important conference matches against Me.-Farmington (2:00 pm) and Thomas College (Sunday, October 4th, 1:00 pm).
