Monarchs Roll Past GMC

(September 5, 2009) - Poultney, VT - The Green Mountain College men's soccer team lost their home opener Saturday afternoon 3-0 to the visiting Monarchs of King's College. The win was the second straight for King's (2-0) while the Eagles fall to (0-1-1).
King's opened the scoring in the 14th minute when a penalty kick was awarded. Sophomore Joe Bender (Shirley, NY) slotted the ball in the back of the net giving the Monarchs and early 1-0 advantage.
After a spell of sustained pressure, King's added a second in the 31st minute when sophomore Rob McGuiness (Forty Fort, PA) drifted in on the back post and finished of a service from the left side.
The Eagles entered the second half with increased energy and began pushing King's on the back foot, but couldn't find a goal. King's notched their final tally in the 65th minute when Bender shook free of his marker and calmly finished from 5 yards.
The Eagles return to action Friday, September 11th at 8:00 pm when they face Bard College at the Raptor Classic.
