WATERVILLE, Maine – The Green Mountain College men's lacrosse team fell in its North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener on Saturday afternoon against Thomas College, 19-4.
In the win, the Terriers move to 1-1 while the Eagles remain winless at 0-4.
The Terriers opened the first quarter with four unanswered goals including two from Johnathan Wilcox. The Eagles responded towards the end of the quarter by tacking on a pair of goals in the final minutes to cut the lead in half. Deven Rogers (Oxford, Maine) scored on a man-up opportunity from Will Durant (Plymouth, Mass.) before Durant scored a goal of his own on a set up from Chris Surdam (Plymouth, Mass.). Thomas added five more in the second frame to just one goal for the Eagles from Surdam to take a 9-3 lead at the break.
Throughout the second half, the Terriers' offensive surge continued by outscoring the Eagles 10-1 to preserve the 19-4 win.
Wilcox led all scorers with seven goals and two assists followed by Jacob Kendall with six goals and five assists. Leo Myers added a hat trick with three goals on seven shots while Colby Blondin netted a pair of goals and four assists. Blondin and Conner Blair combined for 14 caused turnovers and 14 ground balls defensively.
Four Eagles each recorded a goal with Rogers, Durant, Surdam and Dominic Wright (Queens, N.Y.) filling the scoring ledger. Durant added a pair of assists, three groundballs and two caused turnovers to his overall line, while Rogers added six groundballs and five caused turnovers. Wright finished with seven caused turnovers and ten groundballs in addition to his unassisted fourth-quarter goal.
Connor Lamberton earned the win in goal for Thomas, stopping 16 shots. Chelsea Wimble (Colchester, Vt.) made ten saves in the loss for Green Mountain.
The Eagles next game is scheduled for Thursday, March 29 as they are set to host SUNY Cobleskill.
