Mens Golf 7th at NAC Championships

(October 11-12, 2009) - Orono, ME - The Green Mountain College men's golf team finished 7th out of 7 teams at the North Atlantic Conference Championships. Husson University captured the team crown by 40 strokes (604) at the two-round event hosted by the Penobscot Valley Country Club. Husson's Kyle Byrne captured medalist honors firing a two-day 148 (70-72) on the par-72 6442 yard course, finishing 6 strokes clear of teammate Mike Hersey (148).
Castleton finished second with a 644 followed by the University of Maine Farmington (652). Thomas College rounded out the top four with a 704. GMC finished with an 866.
Junior Matt Tarricone (Oneonta, NY) finished top for GMC with a two-round total of 197, shooting a 94 on the opening day followed by a 103 on Monday. Senior Kyle Costanzo (Wnamassa, NJ) opened with a 111, but was able to gather himself for a second-round 101 to capture 2nd for the Eagles, narrowly edging senior Will Welch (Concord, NH) with a 212 (103-111). Senior Ken Enman (Fort Fairfield, ME) and Kevin Keating (West Hartford, CT) rounded out the scoring for GMC with a 243 and 267, respectively.
Keating struggled in the early going, carding a 14 on the opening hole after pulling his drive and taking an unplayable. "The course was set-up for tournament play with slick greens and deep rough," commented head coach Mike Porrier. "It was a very difficult course with treacherous bunkers and, having not played the course previously it was difficult for the guys."
The Eagles return to action Wednesday, October 14th when they travel to the Franklin Pierce Invitational at the Shattuck G.C. in Jaffery, ME.
