Coach Montana is in his fifth year at the helm of the men's basketball program. He took over the basketball program in the fall of 2005 as Green Mountain was completing it's transition to Division III and the program finished the season 1-21. In the 2006-2007 season the program improved to 3-21. The rebuilding process jumped forward in the 07-08 season, as the Eagles program improved to 21-5 and won the Association of Division III Northeast Regional championship, and Montana was chosen the AD3I Coach of the Year. During their first year in the North Atlantic Conference in 2008-2009, coach Monatana lead the team to a 16-11 record and narrowly missed out on the conference championship, falling to Thomas in the semi-finals.

Prior to Green Mountain, Montana spent the 03-04 and 04-05 seasons as an assistant at NCAA Division II Lemoyne College. He helped the Dolphins to a 17-11 record in 03-04 and an 11-17 record in the 04-05 season. He spent the 2001-2002 and 02-03 seasons as an assistant at NCAA Division III Union College. The 01-02 season saw the Dutchmen tie the school record for wins at 21-8, and advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament. In 02-03 Union finished 17-12 record and an appearance in the ECAC East region semifinals.
