Green Mountain Claims Victory Over Fighting Saints

Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch and a stingy defensive effort led the Green Mountain College men's basketball team to victory over local-rivals the College of St. Joseph's 64-59 Wednesday night.

In a hotly contested game that featured 41 total fouls and 12 lead changes, it was the Eagles who snatched the win on the shoulders of senior captain Fabian Ferreira (Queens, NY).  Ferreira was a perfect 4-4 from the line in the final minute  (10-12 on the night) and added a clutch steal with 35 seconds left to help salt the game away.

Green Mountain, who jumped out to an early first half lead, could only stretch their advantage to 5 with 15:18 left before the Fighting Saints drew level and took a 1 point lead into the break, 30-31.

The Eagles brought renewed energy into the second half and began to pull away taking a 48-39 lead at the mid-way point.  The Saints, however, clawed their way back into the game through junior Tyler Herrington (Cambridge, NY) who led CSJ with 18 points and 18 rebounds.  The game was still in question until a lay-up by sophomore Gerard Johnson (Binghamton, NY) with 47 seconds remaining made it a four point Eagles'.  Ferreira followed up with a steal at mid-court and was fouled on his way to the bucket, converting both free throws.

The Eagles, who shot 34.5% on the night, were lead by Ferreira's 15 points and 9 rebounds.  Johnson chipped in with 10 points, 9 boards, and 5 assists.

Green Mountain, who have now won 5 games in a row, are back in action at home on Saturday, December 13, at 2 pm against Vermont Tech.
