Eagles Face Rochester at Chuck Resler Tournament Friday

(Poultney, VT) - Following a disappointing double-overtime loss to cross-town NAIA rival College of St. Joseph's in the season opener Monday night, the Green Mountain College men's basketball team looks to pick up their first win of the season this weekend when they travel to the University of Rochester for the 26th annual Chuck Resler Tournament. The Eagles square off against the host Yellowjackets Friday, November 20th at 8:00 pm followed by a 1:00 pm Saturday meeting with Brockport.
In the season opener, the CSJ Fighting Saints battled back from a 14 point 2nd half deficient to force overtime where, in the 2nd extra period, they pulled away for a hard-fought 87-82 victory. GMC senior Rui Carmo (Cape Coral, FL) dropped a game-high 21 points to add to his 12 rebounds while junior Gerard Johnson (Binghamton, NY) chipped in with 15 and 7 before fouling out late in the 2nd half. Freshman Vladimyr Sibera (Key West, FL) provided a spark off the bench for the Eagles tallying 18 points on 7 for 10 shooting.
The Eagles shot 50.8% from the field, but struggled from the line going 9 for 25 on the day and 2 for 6 in the 2nd overtime.
Rochester enters the season opener against the Eagles coming off a 16-9 (7-7, UAA) 2008-2009 campaign. Despite a roster including 11 returners, the Yellowjackets will have to replace the production of Mike Chmielowiec who lead the team in scoring (21 ppg) and was named a D3Hoops.com 2nd Team All-American during his senior year. Rochester will turn to junior guard Mike Labanowski who returns this season following a season-ending injury last year. During his 13 games, he averaged 11.6 ppg and shot 47% from the field.
The bulk of Rochester's starting experience comes up front. Marcus Roberson and Nate Novosel started every game together in 2008-09. Roberson shot 51% from the floor, averaged 10.1 ppg. and 6.0 rpg. Novosel averaged 10.6 ppg. hitting 47% from the floor, 80% from the line and grabbed 5.,9 rpg. He was named the UAA Rookie of the Year.
Team notes: Following a season-opening last in '08-09, the Eagles rebounded for a 72-70 win over Bard College.....Rui Carmo has notched double-digit scoring in 11 straight games (dating back to '08-09).....Coach Montana will face Rochester asst. coach Jim Driggs on Friday. Montana and Driggs broke into the collegiate coaching ranks together, joining the staff at Union College in 2001-2002 helping to lead the Dutchmen to a 21-8 record and 2nd round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
