Late GMC Charge Falls Short

(Poultney, VT) - The visiting Maine Maritime Mariners turned back a furious second half charge by the Green Mountain College Eagles to pick up a hard-fought 57-43 victory in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action Friday Night. MMA improves to 5-9 (1-3, NAC) while GMC drops to 4-8 on the season and 1-2 in the NAC.
The visitors came out firing, grabbing an early 14-7 advantage on the back of a trio of consecutive three-pointers by sophomore guard Tyler Pineo (Corinth, ME). The Mariners continued to pull away and grabbed their largest lead of the half at 13 on a layup by Shawn Dotsie (Bowdoinham, ME) with 3:02 remaining. GMC cut the lead to 10 with 1:31 left in the half and headed to locker room trailing 24-14.
The Eagles were held to 20.7 percent shooting in the half and were 0-for-4 from the charity stripe while the Mariners shot 32.1 percent including a 6-for-16 effort from beyond the arc. Pineo lead MMA in the opening 20 minutes, dropping 15 of his team-high 21 points.
The Mariners stayed in control of the contest, leading by 12 with just over 10 minutes remaining, before the Eagles went on a 13-2 run, closing the gap to a single point at 39-40. Rui Carmo (Cape Coral, FL) and Trent Morgan (Streetsboro, OH) spurred the Eagle run with five points each.
MMA responded immediately rattling off the next nine points and putting the game out of reach.
The Eagles shot only 27.6 percent for game, went 5-for-29 from beyond the arc and were outrebounded 53-44 by MMA.
Pineo's 21 points were a team-high while Dotsie recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards. Ben Russell (Farmington, ME) chipped in with 11 points and six assists for the Mariners.
Carmo dropped a game-high 22 points for the Eagles while junior Gerard Johnson (Binghamton, NY) grabbed 20 boards and swatted a pair of shots in the losing effort.
Both teams return to conference action tomorrow afternoon with GMC hosting Husson University and MMA traveling to Castleton.
