Colonials Avoid Avalanche from Green Mountain

Four players scored in double figures and the Western
Connecticut State University men's basketball team avoided a second
half comeback by Green Mountain College and held on for a
non-league 87-80 victory at Feldman Arena on Thursday
afternoon.
Freshman Leroy Mayers (Bronx, NY) led the Colonials' offense with
19 points on eight of 10 shooting from the field. He also
collected eight rebounds.
Freshman Daquan Brooks (Bristol, CT) and senior guard Dewayne
Dickens (Danbury, CT) added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Freshman Gary Robinson (Torrington, CT) added 10 points and pulled
in a team-high nine boards.
WestConn led by as many as 19 points, 76-57, with 4:44 remaining in
the second half following a jumper by Brooks.
The Eagles, now 11-8, pecked away at the lead and scored 23 of the
next 27 points in the contest to draw within five points, 85-50 in
the closing seconds of the game.
Green Mountain was led by the duo of Rui Carmo (Cape Coral, FL) and
Fabian Ferreira (Queens, NY) who scored 23 and 22 points for the
visitors. Carmo had a game-high 10 caroms for the Eagles.
WestConn's Tyshawn Gillespie (Hartford, CT) dished out a game-high
10 assists and the Colonials recorded an assist on 28 of their 32
buckets from the field.
The Eagles return to action this Saturday, February 7th, when they
travel to NAC opponent Johnson State College.
