Green Mountain Upends Castleton

Junior Rui Carmo's (Fort Meyers, FL) lay-up with 12 seconds left sealed a come-from-behind victory for the Eagles in a match-up between North Atlantic Conference and cross-town rivals foes Tuesday night, (70-69).

With 22 ticks remaining, senior Fabian Ferriera (Queens, NY) stole a Spartan pass and, after the ensuing GMC timeout, fed Carmo in the post. Rui spun into the lane and finished over the outstretched hand of a Castleton defender for the decisive bucket.  A last-ditch shot by Spartan sophomore Seth Harrington (North Bennington, VT) was blocked by Ferriera to close out the game.

The Eagles, who trailed the Spartans by as many as 12 in the second half, limited the visitors to 7 points in the final 8 minutes while dropping 16 to claim victory .  GMC used a 41.7% shooting effort in the second half coupled with an 8 for 10 effort from the charity stripe to outlast CSC.

The Spartans were led by Harrington who scored 23 on 10 for 16 shooting and a 3 for 7 effort from beyond the arc.  Sophomore Marcus Hass (East Montpelier, VT) chipped in 19 points, grabbed 10 boards, and recorded 6 blocks in the loss while senior Kevin Cayea (Red Hook, NY) finished with 14 points on 4 for 9 shooting from three point land.

A trio of double-digit scorers paced the Eagles.  Sophomore Gerard Johnson (Binghamton, NY) dropped 17 points on 8 for 13 shooting from the field, snagged 13 boards, and recorded 3 assists.  Ferriera added 19 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and a pair of steals, while Carmo recorded 18 points and 9 boards.

With the win, the Eagles improve to (10-5) overall and (2-3) in NAC play while the Spartans fall to (2-14) and (1-4) in the conference.

Both teams return to action with a pair of home conference games against U-Maine Farmington and Thomas College this weekend.  GMC faces Farmington on Friday night at 8pm and Thomas Saturday afternoon at 4pm.
