Eagles Win AD3I Northeast Regional Championship

Poultney, VT (Sunday, February 24, 2008) - In the Championship game of the Association of Division III Independent Conference Northeast Regional Championships, #1 Newbury College Nighthawks and #2 Green Mountain College Eagles tipped-off at Green Mountain College's Eagle Dome.  Newbury had won the first meeting between these two teams in January by 8 and the Nighthawks took the floor where they left off early in the first half stretching their lead to 9 before the Eagles began chipping away.  Green Mountain was able to close the gap in the first to send the game into the locker room with a 31-30 Eagle lead.

The second half saw Newbury regain the lead until 4 minutes left and the game tied at 60.  Green Mountain would take the lead with 3:22 on the clock before Newbury would tie the game at 66 again with 1:05 remaining.    The Eagles would score the next, and only, two points of the game with 49 second remaining.  Newbury had two more chances but could not convert as time ran out.

Newbury was led by sophomore forward Javon Mathis (W. Hartford, CT) who recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  All-Tournament selection senior guard Arch Mitchell (Framingham, MA) would score 20 on 7-11 from the field.  All-Tournament selection senior guard Steven Morris (Somerville, MA) chipped in 10 points in the effort.

Green Mountain was led by the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player senior forward Doug Hammond (Brooklyn, NY) who scored a double-double with 24 points and 17 rebounds.  Junior guard Fabian Ferreira (Queens, NY) jumped in 18 going 4-7 from beyond the arc.  Junior forward Scott McGuinness (Middletown, CT) chipped in 12 while senior guard and All-Tournament selection Adam Fisher (Miami, FL) finished with 13 assists.

Newbury College finishes their season at 18-9.  Green Mountain finishes their season at 21-5.
