Green Mountain Outlasts Southern Vermont, 86-78

Poultney, VT (Tuesday, February 12, 2008) - In an Association of Division III Independent Conference match-up, the Green Mountain College Eagles hosted the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers that would showcase the talents of the #1 and #2 Division III leading rebounders in the NCAA.  They did not disappoint as they had seen each other exactly one week ago in Bennington, VT.

Green Mountain stepped out early getting to an 18-8 lead midway through the first half but Southern VT chipped away and sent the game into the locker room with the Eagles up by only three.  The second half saw early fever on the Mountaineers behalf and they were able to tie the game twice before going up by three at the 14 minute mark.  Green Mountain would slowly surge ahead and thwarted a last push by the Mountaineers during the final minute.

Southern Vermont would see senior forward Nick Harrington (Brooklyn, NY), the NCAA Division III rebounding leader and newly minted AD3I student-athlete of the month of January, knock down 35 points and grab 18 rebounds on the night.  Sophomore guard Emory Wheeler (Virginia Beach, VA) popped in 17 and grabbed 5 boards while freshman guard Brendan Kordana (Adams, MA) also chipped in 17 going 4-13 from beyond the arc.

Green Mountain had two players with double-doubles.  Senior guard Adam Fisher (Miami, FL) would score 31 and dish 12 assists on the night.  Senior forward Doug Hammond (Brooklyn, NY), the NCAA Division III #2 rebounder and recently named D3Hoops team of the week member, would score 25 and grab 15 boards.  Junior guard Fabian Ferreira (Queens, NY) would chip in 10.

Southern Vermont finishes the season at 5-17.  Green Mountain (17-4) hosts Word of Life tomorrow night at 7:30 PM in the second half of a double header where the women will be playing at 5:30 PM.
