Green Mountain Tops West. Conn. in Tight Battle, 57-55
Poultney, VT (Wednesday, January 9, 2008) - In a closely contested match-up at GMC's Waldron Gymnasium, the Eagles from Green Mountain found one more field goal that made the difference. The Colonials from Western Connecticut exploded for an 18-9 lead midway through the first half. Green Mountain battled back and found themselves up by two going into the locker room, 26-24.
Both teams played stalwart defense and hands were cool from beyond the arc for both teams (3-24 combined). The second half saw nine lead changes and the game tied four times. The Colonials led 55-54 with :53 left on the clock. The Eagles turned in a field goal with :23, got a stop, and went to the line with :05 to make it a two point game. No answers came on the ensuing possession.
Green Mountain senior forward Doug Hammond (Brooklyn, NY) led both teams in scoring dropping 21, grabbing 9 boards, and blocking 5 shots. Eagle junior guard Fabian Ferreira (Queens, NY) spotted 15, dished 4 assists, and swiped 4 balls. Senior guard Adam Fisher (Miami, FL) dropped 10 points, had 5 assists, and stole 5 balls.
Western Connecticut was led by senior forward Jamie Procino (Yorktown Heights, NY) who registered a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. Colonial sophomore forward Wilburt Jarrett (Hartford, CT) scored 8 points and grabbed 8 'bounds. Junior forward Marcus Mann (Windsor, CT) also scored 8 and picked up 6 boards.
Green Mountain College (10-1) travels this weekend to play Association of Division III Independents Conference foes Newbury on Saturday and Mitchell on Sunday. Western Connecticut (7-3) travels to UMass Boston for a Little East Conference tilt on Saturday.
