GREEN MOUNTAIN COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the athletic program is to support the educational mission of Green Mountain College. Participation in intercollegiate athletics is seen in relationship to the development of whole persons, and as such is integrally related to the overall educational experience at the College. Intercollegiate athletics is of significant value to the College in the overall development of character, leadership, and responsible decision making.
Green Mountain College has a long tradition of excellence in intercollegiate athletics. Winning has obviously been important in that tradition. However, winning is set in the context of the overall mission and purpose of the institution. The College seeks to provide for its students a holistic educational experience. It realizes the value of physical as well as spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being. Intercollegiate athletics provide a framework in which students can confirm values, practice teamwork, demonstrate sportsmanship, and experience personal responsibility. A fundamental emphasis on academic achievement coupled with the consistent work ethic required by athletics and a sound contribution to campus and community citizenship blends the total experience of a student-athlete.
Green Mountain College seeks to provide an equitable, diverse, and competitive intercollegiate athletic program that is properly administered, educationally sound, and a resource for enhancing community on campus.
