Poultney, VT – Green Mountain College hosted its annual athletic awards banquet on Wednesday, May 2nd, signifying the official end to the 2011-2012 athletic year. Guests arriving to the soiree were treated to a slide show which incorporated many of the athletic highlights from this past year.
Director of Athletics Marybeth Lennox kicked off the evening with a welcoming speech, thanking athletes and all of the athletic staff members for their contributions throughout the year. She then gave out the evening's first awards to Michael Labate and Tammy Petty who received the Director's Award for their outstanding contributions to the athletics program.
Green Mountain College President Paul Fonteyn then addressed the athletes and thanked them for their hard work and dedication to the College's sports teams during their careers. He also praised all the teams for the tremendous sportsmanship and class each displayed during the course of this past season.
The first individual awards given to student-athletes occurred when Vice President of Student Life Dr. Joe Petrick presented Chelsea Paul (Northville, NY) and Christopher Donovan (Bedford, MA) with the Student-Athlete Service Award. The award is given annually to a senior or junior woman and/or man who have demonstrated superior citizenship and ethical conduct on and off the playing fields of Green Mountain College.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) distributed its Senior Student-Athlete Award to Ryan Rusch (Rossie, NY) and Emily Heale (East Bethany, NY).
Male Athlete of the Year was awarded to men's basketball freshman Carnelius Green (Oviedo, FL) for his excellent rookie campaign. Paul took home the Female Athlete of the Year award for her excellent performances on the basketball court and softball diamond.
Between award presentations, seniors Mark Thiong'o (Nairobi, Kenya) and Victoria Mullins (Neptune, NJ) addressed the crowd with their own personal anecdotes and thoughts about the past four years spent at GMC as student-athletes.
Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Jim Wright handed out the Scholar-Athlete Awards to student-athletes who have attended GMC for at least the past two years and had the highest cumulative GPA on their respective teams. A Most Valuable Player, a Most Improved Player and a Coach's Award were presented to a member from each sports team. Four-Year Athlete Awards were also given to a select group of student-athletes who had dedicated themselves to a single sport program for their entire four-year career at GMC.
